Bicton Park Botanical Gardens

Report by Rosemary Budgell, Trip Organiser

A small group of us recently visited Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, East Budleigh, for one of our Outdoor Special Interest Group (OSIG) outings. The weather looked as though it wanted to spoil the trip, but we are a determined group and carried on regardless. In the end, the light drizzle actually worked in our favour - the overcast conditions and softer light reducing harsh highlights and deep shadows, creating gentler colours. There were also plenty of attractive rain droplets clinging to leaves and petals, adding an extra layer of interest for close-up photography.

Although our visit fell between Bicton’s spring displays of rhododendrons and camellias and the arrival of the main summer blooms, the gardens certainly didn’t disappoint. The immaculately manicured grounds provided many photographic opportunities, with multiple shades of vibrant foliage bringing colour and texture to even the dullest weather.

As always, the social side of the outing was every bit as enjoyable as the photography itself and the relaxed atmosphere encouraged good conversation over leisurely stops for food and refreshments. Everyone agreed they’d had a great time - hopefully there will also be plenty of worthwhile photographs to show for it.
