Back in 2022 when Karen was awarded her Royal Photographic Society Licentiate Distinction, she had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before she’d be contemplating working towards Associate Level. The Associate distinction requires a body of work consisting of 15 images, supported by a written Statement of Intent and Presentation Layout. This distinction (generally referred to as the ‘A’) is split into various specialist areas, or genres - examples being Contemporary, Documentary, Travel and Visual Arts. Sidmouth Photographic Club runs a Distinctions Special Interest Group (SIG), offering initial help to members wishing to gain recognition from the RPS, and Karen had previously sought advice from the SIG with her first award.
Karen’s passion for Street Photography and love of travel came together in a trip to Naples, where she spent time wandering around the oldest parts of the city, up and down the narrow streets, looking for that all-important inspiration.
Karen explains “It was on my return from a trip to Naples in April 2023, that I began to wonder if I might have enough material for a panel in the Travel genre. I re-joined the club’s Distinctions SIG in October 2023 (having been part of it for my ‘L’ distinction journey) to give me support on the road ahead. Needless to say, my panel went through countless iterations and there were several tweaks of my Statement of Intent before it was finally ready. It aims to celebrate the character of the Neapolitan people as they go about their everyday lives, the beating heart of this remarkable city. I was delighted to be awarded my ‘A’ on 11th September 2024 and the help from the group along the journey was invaluable”.
Three cheers from the whole SPC family for Karen! Your accomplishment is a shining example of what determination and talent can achieve.
