Report by Karen Brindley, Chairperson

SPC’s annual photographic ‘Battle’ with Torbay Photographic Society took place on Wednesday, 26th November, when thirteen enthusiastic members from Torbay joined us for an evening of keen competition and camaraderie. Not only do the 2 clubs share an interest in good photography and excellent buffets, there has been a friendly rivalry in regards to the wearing of sparkly outfits over the years. This year I decided to finally put this to bed and wore top to toe sequins - with Torbay all wearing their sunglasses in response!!

The event was judged by Marko Dutka, whose insightful critique and good humour added greatly to the night’s enjoyment. He was highly appreciative of the calibre of images submitted and rewarded creativity, as well as visual presentation.

30 Prints and 30 Digitally Projected Images (DPIs) were each scored out of 20 and due to the high quality of entries, Marko was very generous with his scoring.

Commencing with the Print section, both clubs presented an array of high-quality pictures. Sidmouth hit the ground running, securing an early 3 point lead going into the break: Torbay - 295, Sidmouth - 298

At halftime, attendees spent time socialising and enjoyed a delicious buffet prepared by Sidmouth members, as well as a raffle and second hand photography book sale..

Returning to the competition, the Open DPI segment brought an exciting variety of styles and techniques, with Torbay just edging a 3 point lead at the end: Torbay - 289, Sidmouth 286.

The final scores were announced with much anticipation - we knew they would be very close. In the end it was a draw at 584 apiece…which was a fitting end to a lovely evening.

Special recognition goes to the SPC members who received perfect scores of 20, which ended up being 18 out of the 30 images, so a very high scoring evening.

The standard of photography and spirit of friendly competition made for a memorable event. We're already looking forward to next year’s Battle and another thrilling contest!

A selection of Sidmouth's 'perfect 20' images are shown below.
